HOLIDAYS = LENSES

  "for readingproblems"
WHAT IS IT?

Reading requires both eyes to turn inwards to fixate the text nearby and to maintain. This is called "convergence". Convergence weakness means that both eyes can't maintain both eyes turning inwards, to avoid double vision when you're reading. In a less severe form you're not seeing double, but can a headache occur while reading (by the continuous efforts).

This may be caused by a concussion or some sedative medication. This may also be present from childhood, on hereditary basis. Regularly you'll see that, especially in the beginning of the school, the problems arise because you're reading habit which, during the holidays!

Treatment: Don't keep the text too close / eye muscle exercises (cf. below) and possibly a
Reading Glasses: Reading glasses magnified the text, making it easier to read. Possibly there is a glass prism can be applied. This shifts the images and thus solves the dual monitor. A leaf below the text into line, also makes the eyes more focused on the text, which must be read.

EXERCISES

1. Exercise with a ball pen:  move  the pen to your nose and keep your your vision single . Look far and nearby towards the pen.
The art is to keep the pen as close as possible towards your nose in a single vision.

2. Exercise with two pens: Keep the pins on a straight line in front of you. While looking at one pen, you see the other double. Try to keep one pen as close as possible (10 to 15 cm) towards your nose and still have a single vision.

3. A dot ruler: draw a line with the numbered dots on to a piece of hard cardboard. Keep this card for your nose. If you fixate on number 8 ball, you see two lines come together on cross-shaped ball number 8. The art is to see it as close to your nose as possible. You'll notice you're making progress, as you do more exercises.

4. Test with the two cats: If you are looking to a pen in front of the paper, you'll see a  third cat standing behind the pen. That third cat has everything on it and remember: two ears, two whiskers and a tail. The trick is to keep your pen as close as possible and still see that third cat.

5. Relaxation Exercise: Hold the tips of both forfingers together and look above those fingers, in the distance. If you move your fingers apart, you see a small sausage, with the two extremes a fingernail, "the flying hot-dog". This is not seen if you have a lazy eye!

EXTRA TIPS

Do these exercises twice a day for 1 minute (no longer, otherwise you get a headache).
Always finish with the relaxation exercise. After 2 or 3 weeks you'll notice that you can read more comfortable.
So start these exercises right on time (ie 3 weeks before exam period for example).
If these exercises do not satisfy, you can still read with your best eye in order (= the eye through which you watch when you're looking trough a paper with a hole). Cover the other eye off - via patch on inside glasses for example), which strangely enough is easier because both eyes do not have to work together. Other tricks: read with good light / when complaints are: just one break of 5 minutes, insert: it can read better again!
