HAY FEVER (= better term: pollenosis allergy)

Pollenosis allergy is now twice more frequent than 10 years ago (mainly because of pollution, who makes th grains more irritating).
It is a serious health problem in many countries.

What is a pollenosis allergy?

Pollenosis allergy is an abnormal reaction of the body to certain substances (allergens) that are inhaled (especially tree and grass pollen). When we see some other pollen associated allergies such as house dust allergies, animal allergies and food allergies (can be induced by drugs), which may give a similar reaction.
The nose leads to hay fever sneezing, runny nose and nasal congestion. In bronchi to cough, tightness in the chest and / or wheezing. Symptoms can occur alone or associated. Also inhalation of cigarette smoke, infection and stress can cause similar symptoms.
As the eyes are directly be exposed to the allergens, you also see regularly reactions such as irritation, itching and tears.

Despite the fact that the degree of exposure to grass and trees in cities is lower, the incidence of respiratory allergy is in urban areas twice as high as in rural areas.
The increased air pollution (industry, traffic) is a possible explanation for this. The present pollen are covered with chemicalspollution because of the chemicals covered with dirt, so they are more allergenic! Especially silver birches are notorious!

How to prevent or treat?

Pollen  allergy (tree, grass and weed pollen)

These allergens can not possibly be removed from the environment.
Complaints due to pollenosis tend to occur in the spring and summer months (from February to August).
During the pollinisation months you have to beware when it's hot weather with a gentle breeze.

Logically the following measures insist on:

- Close the windows on summer days, especially at the end of the afternoon when the pollen levels are highest.
- Ventilate the house early in the morning, late at night or after a rainstorm.
- Avoid h
iking, camping or picnicking in a grassy area.
- Preferably immediately take a walk after the rain.
- While driving the car, keep the windows closed and turn off the ventilation.
- Birch trees around the house are best removed. They normally give the most expense in April.
- Mowing the grass is best done by someone else.
- Go on holiday to the mountains, and maritime region.
- Inquire information with your general practicer to learn more about the pollinisation periods at the destination of your holiday.
- Avoid outdoor sports in summer.
- Listening to the information for hay fever sufferers on radio and TV or phone call 02/642.55.55 ("Hello Polling"). Via an automatic answering machine get the state poll of the moment. You can then respond appropriately.
They who are connected to Videotex "Minitel" terminal dial 02/642.53.60 for direct access to "the poll information ".

 Avoid other allergic contact

Because they usually play a role: furry animals. If you can relinquish a pet, then daily wetting the fur with lukewarm water is useful.
Substance: try to limit the carpet surface to a minimum and use air fresheners with good filters. Notice the dust in the bedroom through the following measures substance.

Fabric Measures for the bedroom:

- Prefer washable floor covering (vinyl or parquet) and washable paint or wallpaper.
- Prefer synthetic curtains and bedding.
- Mattress and pillows, the mattress best pack in a waterproof, washable cover.
- Pillow (s) very frequent washing.
- Clothing, pets and plush toys are best removed from the chamber.
- Try to minimize heating the rooms.
- Regularly ventilate the rooms and leave the bed open during the day.
- Clean the room regularly with water and vacuuming mattress and bedding regularly.
- Fungal spores such as pollen depends on the concentration of fungal spores in the air of climatic conditions. The maximum concentration occurs at the end of autumn, when it's warm and humid
- Handle wet places (eg behind wallpaper, air-conditioning systems, etc.) in the house.
- Replace flower pots with a white film on the soil.
- Avoid walking in the woods when it's rainy or foggy.
- Don't touch dead and rotting leaves.

Food and drinks

Food like eggs, milk and fish can cause respiratory allergy. Other food can cause allergy in pollen allergic patients by cross-reaction (Birch pollen like nuts, apples, stone fruit, pear, kiwi and carrots / grass pollen are similar to potatoes / Mugwort pollen similar to celery, melon and banana). The symptoms are usually itching of the lips, mouth and even swelling of the tongue and / or throat.
There occur also eye, nose and respiratory complaints.

* Food additives such as dyes and preservatives, often give rise to pseudo-allergy (= phenomena exactly similar to allergic symptoms, but not mediated by antibodies).

* Also substances naturally present in the diet, can trigger similar phenomena, eg
- Tyramine (present eg. In tomato, banana and wine)
- Phenylethylamine (eg present. In chocolate)

Non-specific irritants allergic reactions may be hypersensitive or hyperactive airways for various irritants:
- Alcoholic beverages
- Perfume, fragrant flowers and cigarette smoke;
- Cold and fog;
- Stress, emotion or effort
