EYES AND AGE

 INTRODUCTION: NORMAL EYE STRUCTURES

What your need to see normal:
- Clear media: cornea / lens / vitreous
- Normal axial lenght: 23 mm
- Functional retina and optic nerve

 MANY AGE-RELATED EYE DISORDERS ARE:

 BEFORE BIRTH

Heredity or diseases can cause eye problems in the unborn child. If one of the parents has a serious eye problem, or is blind, genetic counseling should be sought before the child is conceived. From conception, the fetus may suffer the consequences of hostile conditions. Second for the pregnant woman harmless diseases can have serious consequences for the child: toxoplasmosis and rubella. Incurred by the mother during the first months of pregnancy, these diseases can affect the visibility of the child. A blood test for toxoplasmosis is necessary to verify the immunity of the mother. The non - immune women should only eat well cooked meat and should avoid the company of cats as possible transmitters of this disease. Rubella in infants can lead to cataracts. Fortunately, systematic vaccination of girls under 10 years banned this disease from our region.

THE CHILD IS BORN

Countries like ours have today an excellent medical supervision. Newborns are fully tested and problems can be detected very early.
Yet there are some points in infants who deserve your attention and can bring parents to an ophthalmologist immediately:
- White pupils or a white appearance in the eyes
- Large or abnormally small eyes
- Permanent and manifest strabismus (a mild form of unconstant strabismus is the age of six months is usually not alarming).
Children follow light on average from the age of 6 weeks. This may be sooner or later! Very soon the child will begin to explore his environment: do so, however, that hazardous and toxic products out of reach. Tighten the babies securely in the car seat (new regulations from 1 September 2006).

THE TODDLER

Between 2 and 5 years, several signs make you to consult an ophthalmologist: strabismus (even though it is not constant), visionproblems, abnormal fatigue or headaches of a child who may indicate an eye problem. Dangerous or toxic products are more than ever, causes of accidents. Rinse in the event of an accident involving toxic products immediately and abundantly the eyes of the child.

THE CHILD FROM 6 TO 12 YEARS

At this age, latent, invisible genetic diseases begin: this is true for pigmentosis retinitis (disease of the retina). Diabetes, which is rare in children, may cause long term eye problems. Basic precautions are certainly in this phase: dangerous toys (scissors, arrows). In toxic products and caraccidents (seat belt) or by bike (helmet).

THE ADOLESCENT

The adolescent may complain about recent short-sightedness (which he adapted to so far). This can be corrected with glasses and lenses. In this age category it's also very important to protect the head and eyes. Accidents happens the most around this age. Wearing a helmet is an example of protection. Because when you're having a skull wound, it can affect the ability to see.
Sports are healty, but watch out with tennis - or squash balls! These balls fit just into the eye and it can hurt a lot!
see your ophtalmologist when such things happens. Mostly the pain disappears, but let it check to prevent worsening.

THE ADULT

From 18 to 40 years are accidents, more than ever the causes of vision problems. Most can be avoided.
- At work (welding shops, construction work ...) is required to wear safety glasses.
- Protective goggles are recommended by a lot of activities, follow this advise.
- The traffic is dangerous ... wear a seat belt, respect speed limits, wear a helmet when you're on two wheels.
- Good lighting is important, not too strong nor too weak to avoid eye fatigue and wear sunglasses to protect your eyes against sunburn.

THE ADULT OF 40 YEARS

From 40 years glaucoma becomes enemey number one. The disease is characterized by high internal eye pressure and evolves without noticing. When you expierence the slidest damage, you come and see your ophtalmologist, because a reduction of your visual field may occur, wich is sometimes irreversible. Untreated glaucoma can lead to blindness. Hence the importance of early detection which allows an effective treatment. Another danger of this age-related diabetes, also can cause serious eye damage (diabetic retinopathy). Since 40 years is an anually visit to the ophthalmologist recommended.

FROM 60 YEARS

From the age of 60 years, there may arise eye diseases associated with aging. An annual visit to the ophthalmologist is recommended. Cataract is the most common, it affects the crystalline lens that becomes progressively opaque. Fortunately, cataract can be cured with surgery, usually with excellent results. This surgery is very regular and it runs with local anesthetica.
Age-related macular degeneration is another disease that is unfortunaltey more and more common. It affects the macula (central part of the retina) and causes a gradual decrease in the visibility. If it reduces visibility or it gets cloudy or distorted (straight lines "seen" as curved), one should immediately consult an ophthalmologist. The earlier the detection, the better the results.
Blindness is a serious handicap and can be avoided with early treatment (with laser or injections of medication into the eye)!
